"Cut a dash" có từ dash là vết, nét (tô màu trên bức họa...), vẻ phô trương, dáng trưng diện -> cụm từ này nghĩa là có vẻ ngoài bảnh bao hoặc cũng có nghĩa là làm ra vẻ, làm ra dáng, khoe khoang, phô trương.

Ví dụ
He felt well groomed and he cut a dash. He hoped Charlotte thought the same. Donald had acknowledged that George would ask for Charlotte's hand in marriage today. George felt sure she would agree.

British Prime Minister (Thủ tướng Anh) Tony Blair strutted (sải bước, đi khệnh khạng, vênh váo, oai vệ) into the fashion world on Tuesday -- then revealed that his attempts to cut a dash in the beachwear (trang phục đi biển) range proved a disaster.

Alison, who had a shrewd (sắc sảo) understanding of her grandfather, wrote to Marjory following his death: No one could say he behaved very perfectly in his life, but one always has a weakness for those who cut a dash and hold their heads up in spite of hardship (khó khăn) and humiliation (tủi nhục).

Its just such a morning as it was the eighteenth of last September, when I set off from my sister Cut-a-dash—I dare say you know Citizen Cut-a-dash, my brother-in-law? — Well, his wife is my own half-sister (cùng cha khác mẹ) ; but we ean't much alike, for you see I am a plain (giản dị, bình thường) body, and have got three children to work for.
