'Too clever by half' nghĩa là có thái độ tự hào (huyên hoang) về trí thông minh, kỹ năng của bản thân (tới mức vượt quá sức mình, hoặc lừa dối người khác; arrogant, proud, conceited...)

Ví dụ
I always read Patrick Murphy’s column. He is a very clever writer but in some instances, he may be ‘too clever by half’ which could be the occupational hazard (rủi ro nghề nghiệp) of clever writers.

Mr Hubler’s mistake stemmed from being too clever by half. Like several traders (thương nhân, thương gia) at the time, he predicted trouble ahead for the US housing market and placed derivative (phái sinh) bets on the default (không trả được nợ, vi ước) of the riskiest types of subprime mortgage bonds (trái phiếu thế chấp vay mua nhà dưới chuẩn).

The tactic (cách, chước, thủ đoạn, mưu kế) of sticking by Labour while forcing it to change is too clever by half. Remainers are meant to put pressure on the Labour leadership by voting for Remain parties and then about turn and back Labour in a general election (bầu cử phổ thông). They may do, but as everyone says, once trust is lost it is hard to rebuild it, especially when the centre-left has seen through Corbyn.

The Ottoman empire began in the late thirteenth century when the Osmanlis, a Turkish clan or tribe, somehow penetrated (xâm nhập) into northwest Anatolia, far from the plains (đồng bằng) and pastures (đồng cỏ, bãi cỏ) of their ancestral home, very close to the center of Byzantine (Greek) power. This warrior people was swift to move and keen for loot—very dangerous. The Greeks should have known it and seen them as potential, inevitable enemies. Instead, these pseudo-Hellenes, too clever by half, thought they could turn the Ottomans into tools and allies.
