'Too clever by half' nghĩa là có thái độ tự hào (huyên hoang) về trí thông minh, kỹ năng của bản thân (tới mức vượt quá sức mình, hoặc lừa dối người khác; arrogant, proud, conceited...)

I always read Patrick Murphy’s column. He is a very clever writer but in some instances, he may be ‘too clever by half’ which could be the occupational hazard (rủi ro nghề nghiệp) of clever writers.
