"Between a rock and a hard place" có nghĩa là ở trong một tình thế cực kỳ khó khăn khi phải lựa chọn giữa một trong hai phương án. Tương tự "between Scylla and Charybdis". Thành ngữ này bắt nguồn từ Mỹ vào năm 1921, khi các công nhân mỏ tại Arizona biểu tình để yêu cầu được tăng lương và cải thiện điều kiện làm việc nhưng lại phải đối mặt với hai lựa chọn.
