"Pay through the nose" nghĩa là gì?

'Pay through the nose' = trả bằng mũi. Theo như một số câu chuyện kể về nguồn gốc của cụm từ này thì vào thế kỉ thứ 9 khi người Ireland không thể trả nổi thuế thì họ sẽ phải bị cắt mũi. Nghe đã thật đau đớn rồi đúng không các bạn? -> Hiện giờ từ này được dùng để nói khi bạn phải trả một khoản chi phí cắt cổ (nghe cũng xót ruột nhỉ :D).
Ví dụ
We have over-stressed the importance and attraction of a college education to our young people, given them unrealistic (thiếu thực tế) expectations and made them pay through the nose for it. And at the same time we’ve devalued (giảm giá trị) education by doing this.
