"Ship has sailed" = thuyền đã ra khơi/ ván đã đóng thuyền -> quá muộn/ vụt mất cơ hội.

Ví dụ
By the time a person has symptoms (triệu chứng) and comes to their doctor with concerns, we can see flames through the windows. It is already spreading (lan rộng), and that ship has sailed. The house is toast.

Prior to the 2018 season, many thought the ship had sailed when Los Angeles elected to not re-sign (tái ký) him. But when Hunter Henry suffered a knee injury (chấn thương đầu gối) last offseason the team knew it was going to need insurance (bảo hiểm) at tight end. Because of that, Gates returned on a one-year deal (hợp đồng một năm).

“That ship has sailed. If I could have come here three years ago, I would have loved it. You would have loved it. We would have had a lot of fun,” he said with a cackle of laughter (cười nhảm), “but even if it was offered to me, I couldn’t accept it because I would be walking away from a political situation that we have to see through.”
