'In a brown study' có 'brown' ban đầu được dùng với nghĩa đơn giản là 'dark' = tối, sâu thẳm hay nghiêm túc -> cụm từ này nghĩa là trầm ngâm suy nghĩ.

Ví dụ
After the decision made by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on November 27, the parishes (giáo dân, xứ đạo) of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox churches in Western Europe are in a brown study on their future. However, they have no choice, really.

“Your wits (trí thông minh) are gone wool-gathering. You are in a brown study. Your brains are asleep, and you seem bewildered (bối rối, lúng túng). The allusion is to village children sent to gather wool from hedges; while so employed they are absent, and for a trivial purpose. To be wool-gathering is to be absent-minded, but to be so to no good purpose.”

Brown study is a splendid old expression for gloominess. In the 17th and 18th centuries, at much the same time as people started to say they felt blue, the colour brown was used to refer to a rather less miserable (đau khổ) state. Samuel Johnson defined brown study as "gloomy meditations" while Webster's Dictionary in the US said it was "serious reverie, thoughtful absent-mindedness". The OED defines brown study as "A state of mental abstraction or musing (mơ màng, trầm ngâm)", which is probably what your mother had in mind.
