'Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely' có từ corrupt là ăn hối lộ, tham nhũng, đồi bại, tha hóa -> thành ngữ này nghĩa là 'Quyền lực làm con người tha hóa, quyền lực tuyệt đối thì tha hóa tuyệt đối'.

When political masters rule a nation for too long with unbridled (buông thả) power, abuse and mismanagement usurps (chiếm đoạt) good governance. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Over time, we saw more and more corruption, robbery and financial scandals of huge scale being blatantly (hiển nhiên) committed by our political masters. To ensure their continued hegemony (quyền lãnh đạo) and dominance over the people, the rule of law and good governance gave way to a system of divide and rule with sticks and carrots as the art of politics.
