"The sick man of (something or somewhere)" = Chỉ điều gì/nơi nào đó không được nghe đến, không ổn định và không tránh được khả năng sụp đổ, đặc biệt khi so sánh với những nơi/vùng lân cận, láng giềng hoặc cùng ngang hàng và địa vị.

Ví dụ
The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest empires in the world for over 6 centuries. Towards its end, internal and external factors (yếu tố bên trong và bên ngoài) weakened it, resulting in it being referred to as the "sick man of Europe."

Japan's richest man has warned that Brexit is "practically impossible" and could take the United Kingdom back to the economic stagnation (sự trì trệ) of the 1970s when the country was often described as the "sick man of Europe."

For much of the last 10 years, Germany has been lauded (tán dương) for its successful adjustment to globalization (toàn cầu hóa), its sound management of public finances, and its political stability. Some have even breathlessly talked of a new Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle). Now fears are mounting (tăng lên) that worsening global trade tensions (sự căng thẳng thương mại) and China’s slowdown spell serious trouble for the country’s export-dependent economy (nền kinh tế phụ thuộc vào xuất khẩu) threatening to return the country to the “sick man of Europe” status it held in the early 2000s.
