"The watches of the night" = Đồng hồ ban đêm -> Thời điểm, giờ giấc lúc ban đêm khi ai đó thức giấc.
Ví dụ
On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow (cái bóng) of your wings.
In A study in Scarlet, we read: “I left Holmes seated in front of the smouldering fire (ngọn lửa âm ỉ), and long into the watches of the night I heard the low, melancholy (u sầu) wailings (than vãn) of his violin, and knew that he was still pondering (trầm tư) over the strange problem which he had set himself to unravel (làm sáng tỏ).”
St Luke describes in more detail — and it all takes place at night. “In the countryside close by, there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep during the watches of the night. An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord (sự vinh quang của Thiên Chúa) shone round them. They were terrified, but the angel said, ‘Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour (Chúa cứu thế) has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.’”
