'Work both sides of the street' = có vị trí làm việc trên cả hai phía của một con phố để bán hàng cho khách ở mỗi bên -> nghĩa là hỗ trợ, tham gia vào cả hai phía của vấn đề, chương trình, tình huống. Đôi khi nó được dùng để ám chỉ những người làm vì lợi ích cá nhân, những người ăn ở hai lòng.

Even so, a sufficiently hard-headed company might choose to work both sides of the street – continuing to do business with fossil fuel companies, while also writing more expensive insurance against climate damage.

In several respects, the story is troubling because it shows how consultants (đơn vị tư vấn) like Ernst and Young work both sides of the street in helping clients like Foxconn get the best deal. Not only was E&Y working for Foxconn; the Walker administration drew heavily from the same firm to justify the $4 billion in state and local tax subsidies for the plant, which is still in a state of flux.

It’s a matter of pride (kiêu hãnh, tự hào) for lawyers that they are free and able to work both sides of the street. In particular the cab-rank rule for barristers (luật sư) dictates as much. One day as a prosecutor, next for an accused; for the state and against it. And in the civil sphere there’s much swapping of hats while working for plaintiffs (nguyên đơn) and alternatively for defendants (bị đơn).

Citizen complaints (phàn nàn) about an open-air (môi trường tự do, thoải mái) prostitution (gái mại dâm) market drove ABC/Vice unit detectives to work both sides of the street, city Police Director Jerry Speziale said. They had help from the department’s Narcotics (điều tra về buôn lậu ma túy) Division and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department, as well as from counselors with the county prosecutor’s Human Trafficking Unit, he said.
