"Give (someone) a hammering" = cho ai một trận đòn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đánh ai dữ dội; đánh thắng hoặc đánh bại ai một cách chân chính; khiển trách, phê phán ai nặng nề.

Ví dụ
There was plenty on the line (mập mờ ở giữa) a fortnight (hai tuần lễ) ago when the counties clashed in Ennis. “Sure when it came down to Clare and Limerick, I was only hoping Clare would give them a hammering, text the auld lad and let him know about it!

Don’t expect to give them a hammering on rough roads – that’s not what they’re designed for – but for weekend riding on smooth surfaces not too far from home, they perform admirably. Not too heavy, not too expensive, the only thing they suffer from is a slightly pedestrian image.

Let's just say they were not afraid to give them a hammering, no matter what model they happened to be in. It was an eye opener, but the Wrangler I had been loaned (cho vay, cho mượn) for the event was something I didn't want to dent (ảnh hưởng), so I took it at a rather more sedate (bình thản) pace (nhịp độ).
