"The world, the flesh, and the devil" = thế gian, xác thịt và ma quỷ/mọi thứ phàm tục trên cõi đời -> nghĩa là nguồn gốc của mọi tội lỗi và sự cám dỗ.

In many cases, these monks (thầy tu) and nuns (bà xơ, ni cô) are living a life little different in essence from that of the desert fathers and mothers of ancient times — quite as if the modern world, with its ever multiplying complexities and ever deeper confusion, has nothing important to say to them. And they are right: it could only speak to them at lurid (ghê gớm, khủng khiếp) length of the world, the flesh, and the devil, when they are seeking heaven, grace (ân điển), and God, for themselves and for others.
Although the book of Acts shows there was still “little by little,” there were also remarkable advances – including the dramatic conversion (người trò chuyện, chuyển hóa) of the archenemy (kẻ thù không đội trời chung, quỷ Satan) Paul, into Gospel Herald. So, while the world, the flesh and the devil continued to “increase” (Matthew 24:12), that same word for “increase” – “multiplication” (sự tăng bội; sự nhân) – is used to describe the surprising growth of: the number of the disciples (môn đệ) (Acts 6:1,7), the church (Acts 9:31), and the influence of the word of God (Acts 12:24).
