"Give a bad name to" nghĩa là gì?

"Give a bad name to (someone or something)" = Làm xấu danh tiếng của ai/cái gì; nói những điều xấu về ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday appealed (kêu gọi) to people to peacefully protest against the amended Citizenship Act, saying violence (bạo lực) will give a bad name to the whole movement and make it easier for the government to suppress (tịch thâu, cấm hoạt động) the cause.

“We, like the Indian Medical Association (IMA), believe that there are a few miscreants (tà giáo, kẻ đê tiện) who give a bad name to the entire community. So, ideally, civil society organisations and the IMA should work together to bring effective regulations (danh tiếng) of pharmaceutical (thuộc y dược) companies,” said Dr. Gadre, a co-author of the report.

I don't assume every single thing Miller investigates is a hoax (đánh lừa, chơi khăm) or a hallucination (ảo giác), and I wish the scientific community didn't automatically dismiss all unexplained occurrences as such; we're too inclined to believe we have all natural phenomena (hiện tượng, hiếm có) basically figured out. The ghost-hunter TV shows that Miller cites as a boon (lợi ích, ân huệ) to her profession are exactly what give a bad name to any serious scientist interested in this field. But there are still those who try: For actual scientific attempts to study the paranormal (huyền bí, siêu linh), check out the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia.
