United States officials list 2,143 American members of the military and civilians still missing in action (MIA, mất tích khi làm nhiệm vụ) in Southeast Asia. More than 1,600 of the total were in Vietnam.

American veterans of the Vietnam War took another step toward reconciliation (hòa giải) with their former enemies (cựu thù) today, handing over information about mass graves (hố chôn tập thể) where 600 North Vietnamese servicemen (người phục vụ trong quân đội, quân nhân) are thought to be buried (chôn).

James Brazee, president of Vietnam Veterans of America, handed his counterpart (Nguyen Trong Vinh) in Hanoi a North Vietnamese soldier's ammunition pouch (túi đạn) and gas mask (mặt nạ phòng độc) along with a briefcase packed with papers related to the war that ended 21 years ago.

...The documents, which included maps (bản đồ) pinpointing (định vị) two burial sites in the central province of Quang Tri, increased to more than 6,000 the number of Vietnamese war dead about whom the American veterans group has provided information. The group began the drive in February 1994, asking members to turn in battlefield souvenirs to help Vietnam determine the fate of some of its 300,000 missing servicemen.
