'Spare one's feelings' có từ spare là tha, tha thứ, dung thứ, miễn cho, cụm từ này nghĩa là kiềm chế tránh làm tổn thương đến cảm xúc của ai (xấu hổ, lo lắng, không thoải mái...); không chạm đến tình cảm của ai.
