"Spare my feelings" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy cứ vui cười lên, em đẹp nhất khi em cười thật xinh Photo by Tim Savage from Pexels

'Spare one's feelings' có từ spare là tha, tha thứ, dung thứ, miễn cho, cụm từ này nghĩa là kiềm chế tránh làm tổn thương đến cảm xúc của ai (xấu hổ, lo lắng, không thoải mái...); không chạm đến tình cảm của ai.

Ví dụ
I need someone to try that Japanese Cheesecake Soufflé and I may need you to lie to me if it is really good. If you try it and it’s just ok, I can handle that. But if it is mind-blowingly fantastic, I might need you to tell me it was disgusting just to spare my feelings.

“I have demanded answers and received none, if he wanted to spare my feelings email me, call me, speak to me in person, but I have received nothing regarding this … appointment. The manner in which these seats are appointed is wrong and needs to be changed so that what happened to me does not happen to anyone else,” said Van Ginhoven.

Speaking of difficult decisions, Liza agreed not to see Josh anymore after promising Charles that their perceived chemistry in the Infinitely 21 ad meant nothing. To be fair, though, Liza kind of brought this on herself by traveling to Chicago and confronting Charles face to face. In her attempt to spare his feelings, she actually made him more insecure (không an toàn) about her lingering (còn rơi rớt lại, mỏng manh) attraction to Josh.

"Blow off some steam" nghĩa là gì?

Câu cá là bài học kiên nhẫn Photo by Tomasz Filipek from Pexels

'Blow off some steam' = xì hơi nước -> làm gì đấy để giải tỏa căng thẳng hay giận giữ (ví dụ như nói chuyện với ai đó, tham gia các hoạt động thư giãn, giải trí...)

Ví dụ
We’re officially one day closer to the weekend, Toronto. In case you’re already in the mood to blow off some steam, we’ve rounded up the top events happening across the city today, Thursday, August 22.

Stressed out by bad drivers? Need to blow off some steam after a difficult week of school or work? We have a suggestion that might help you do that in a fun, safe way. Unleashed (giải phóng) Rage Room offers an axe throwing room, and “rage rooms” where you can smash, crush and throw various objects while in a safe environment and wearing protective gear.

Thanks to her YouTube channel "Heather’s Closet," Heather Dubrow has been giving us loads of footage of Dubrow Chateau, with seemingly no room left unseen. Want to see The Real Housewives of Orange County alum’s sumptuous (xa xỉ, lộng lẫy) private office? Or where the kids blow off some steam? Or the home’s enormous movie theater? Since opening the 22,000-square-foot home’s doors to the world, Heather has unveiled every aspect of meticulous design that went into the stunning property.

"Hold your feet to fire" nghĩa là gì?

Bây giờ như nào, đưa tiền hay ăn đạn??? Photo by: Jonathan Cooper on Unsplash

"Hold (one's) feet to fire" = dí chân (ai) vào lửa -> nghĩa là gây áp lực để khiến người ta phải khai thông tin, phải làm việc, phải chấp nhận.

Ví dụ
So it’s incumbent (là phận sự của ai) on districts to spend wisely (sáng suốt) and show improvement (tiến triển). The state’s A-F accountability (trách nhiệm giải trình) system is a good tool for voters to hold their feet to the fire. Fort Worth ISD has earned a pat on the back — along with a gentle push (cú đẩy nhẹ) on the improvements needed to get to a B and beyond.

She had an amazing ability (khả năng) to offer condolences (lời chia buồn) when you walked in with a stack of parking tickets but would gently hold your feet to the fire on paying the associated fines. She was more than the “receptionist” for town hall. She was the gatekeeper (người giữ cổng), and would gently (nhẹ nhàng) remind anyone new to town, or new to the system, of how things worked here in Crested Butte.

Even though nobody is actually ever canceled, the importance of people who call out the homophobic, racist (phân biệt chủng tộc), ableist, misogynist (kẻ ghét đàn bà), etc. etc. among us can’t be understated. The pressure applied to celebrities and those in the public eye from hordes of regular folks and activists is vastly important in articulating what actions will and won’t be accepted by society anymore. Every time someone becomes a trending topic (chủ đề) for hate speech and intolerance (không khoan dung), it’s a reminder that there will always be people among us who will hold your feet to the fire if you say something that could threaten our lives.

"Love you and leave you" nghĩa là gì?

"Chỉ còn gần em một giây phút thôi. Một giây nữa thôi là xa nhau rồi." Photo by Esther Driehaus on Unsplash

"Love you and leave you" là thành ngữ được dùng để nói rằng bạn phải đi dù bạn rất muốn ở lại lâu hơn. Đây cũng là một cách nói hài hước để tạm biệt.

Ví dụ:
Before I love you and leave you, I have two things left to say. The first regards the head photo of the report...

We’ve potentially (có khả năng) got a long day ahead of us tomorrow, so we’re going to love you and leave you for this evening.

Right, it's time for me to love you and leave you. Thanks for joining me and for all of your good luck messages for the girls. (From BBC Sport)

On what’s to come, she added: “Well, as they say 'you tease (chọc ghẹo) the ones you love' so I will have to love you and leave you on that one but it’s not over and it’s just as exciting.

"Lead someone a merry/pretty dance" = dẫn nhảy -> gây khó khăn, trở ngại cho ai/ làm phiền ai. Cũng có thể nói "someone leads you a dance" hoặc "leads you a merry chase".

Ví dụ
Surprise your little one with a knock on the bedroom door from Santa’s elves who will lead you on a merry dance to La Mon’s Winter Wonderland.

On their quest (hành trình) to perfect a tongue sandwich, Max’s dad’s drone (flycam) is destroyed, leading them on a merry dance around the city to get it replaced - which takes in some pretty eye-opening (bắt mắt) stuff for a 45 year old film critic, let alone three dorky tweens.

The Connor Beasley-ridden speedster (tay đua ngựa tốc độ) was backed (ủng hộ) as if defeat was out of question though, starting as the 4-1 favourite, and led his 21 rivals on a merry dance as he burst out of the stalls (chuồng) before forging (vượt) a purposeful path down the centre of the course.

"Sitting pretty" nghĩa là gì?

Xinh đẹp cũng là một loại may mắn. Photo by Brooke Cagle on Unsplash

"Sitting pretty" = ngồi đẹp -> tình huống thuận lợi, may mắn/ làm tốt/ tài chính dồi dào.

Ví dụ
It would be easy, if simplistic (đơn giản), to consider the life of a Prosecco producer as "sitting pretty."

“We've been looking at it over the last couple of years,” School Superintendent (giám thị) Brent Barry said. “And I think we're sitting pretty good financially."

FORBES RELEASES HIGHEST-PAID (thù lao cao nhất) STARS LIST: Dwayne Johnson is sitting pretty on top of its highest-paid actors list. The Rock raked (thu về) in an estimated $89.4 million between June 1, 2018 and June 1, 2019.

Andy Peaks’ team head into the bank holiday weekend double-header (hai đầu) sitting pretty at the top of the early BetVictor Southern League Premier Central table and boasting (kiêu hãnh) the only 100 per cent record in the division.

"Times have changed" nghĩa là gì?

Rồi ai cũng khác. Photo by  Murray Campbell

"Times have changed" = Thời gian/mọi thứ đã thay đổi -> Hoàn cảnh/tình huống hiện tại đã khác hẳn so với trước.

Ví dụ
The next time a student acts out, they might just ignore it. How times have changed. In the (g) olden days, parents would gift teachers with canes on the first day of school. If this happened every year, teachers back then must have had quite an impressive collection.

Times have changed. In 1980, when Super Sunday began, the idea of walking around with a tiny computer in your pocket connecting you to people on the other side of the world was something out of science fiction (khoa học viễn tưởng). People often scheduled times on Sundays to talk to their out-of-town relatives (họ hàng xa) because long-distance calling was only five cents a minute on Sundays.
9
Times have changed but are no longer strange. Beijing just upped the ante and called the pro-democracy protesters “terrorists” (kẻ khủng bố) . Hong Kong is a hair closer to becoming the next Tiananmen massacre (cuộc thảm sát) as China warns of playing with fire and hints at military intervention (sự can thiệp quân sự). The United States led by Trump has vowed to escalate trade war with China, and as of now both are bleeding sea of red and flirtatious (thích ve vãn) volatility (tính nhẹ dạ) reign in their major indexes. More so, China’s economy has slowed the most in twenty six years as a direct result of the trade war.

"Big-girl pants" nghĩa là gì?

Trưởng thành là cứ đạp lên dư luận mà sống. Photo by Matthew T Rader

"Big-girl pants" = Quần cho cô gái chín chắn -> Từ lóng chỉ khả năng hành xử như một người phụ nữ trưởng thành. Cụm này cũng hàm ý một cách miệt thị rằng họ đang hành xử không phù hợp như một người phụ nữ thực thụ.

Ví dụ
We can either keep doing it or I can put my big girl pants on and realise that we're going to have to make some big decisions.

“Here we go again. Here we go again. And then you get mad, you want to cry. And you have to put your big-girl pants on and keep moving on.

Furthermore, Christine demanded that Tori finally act like a producer and do some dirty work. More specifically, she wanted Tori to fire the head writer since they couldn’t afford to lose Jason, and Jason had previously threatened to quit the show if the writer wasn’t fired. So Tori put on her big girl pants and fired the writer. But Christine also wanted her to get Shannen on board, since for her, there was no show without Brenda (duh).

"On your last leg" nghĩa là gì?

Tai nghe là thứ dễ hỏng nhất vì tội vứt lung tung đây mà. Photo by Kevin Grieve on Unsplash

"On its/one's last leg" có nghĩa là (vật) gần hỏng, mất chức năng hoặc (người) sắp chết.

Ví dụ
It can be hard to know if a relationship is on its last leg, so I collected some signs that might help you figure out where your relationship stands.

Maelstrom looked like he was on his last leg, and I could tell this was going to end in one final attack. “Tsunami.” Maelstrom said in a deep low growl (càu nhàu).

If your pair of earbuds (tai nghe) are on their last leg and adhered together with only duct tape (gắn bằng băng dính), there are a few things you can do to extend their lifespan (tuổi thọ).

I looked at my watch and realized if I continued at this speed, I would make it to the church (đi tu/ dừng hoạt động) with about a minute to spare. As I pulled into the hotel parking lot, I knew it was on its last leg.

"A worm will turn" nghĩa là gì?

Tức nước vỡ bờ đấy. Photo by Christian Fregnan

"A worm will turn" = Con giun xéo lắm cũng quằn -> Kể cả một người điềm tĩnh, ngoan ngoãn cũng phải đòi quyền lợi của mình hoặc phản kháng trong một tình huống không thể chịu đựng nổi.

Ví dụ
The Blake Street Worm Turners can't twist and twirl in the wind beyond the ... hasn't waned, however, as he stated recently: “The worm will turn.

How many times can a manager stand in front of the media after a tough loss (trận thua đau) and say, confidently and with a straight face, that “the worm will turn”?

Eight months later, the worm is starting to turn. I'm awash (bị cuốn đi) in paying work. A federal judge has ordered our cases to proceed to discovery. The governor's decision to veto $444 million from the budget, harming seniors, students and Medicaid patients, is grossly unpopular. And we still don't have that $6,700 Permanent Fund dividend (phần được chia).

"At the end of your rope" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng đánh mất niềm tin cho dù trong bất cứ hoàn cảnh nào. Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

"At the end of one's rope" nghĩa là ở trong cảnh túng quẫn, khốn cùng.

Ví dụ
He’s at the end of his rope and willing to break the rules.

You’ll never be at the end of your rope because God is ever-present (luôn hiện diện).

“It’s stunning (tuyệt vời),” Dr. Gill said. “It gives me chills. We’re talking about somebody at the end of their rope. It’s nothing short of a miracle. When thousands of tumors (khối u) go away, it’s amazing.”

We want a place where there’s integrity (toàn vẹn, chính trực), where there’s privacy, because when you are distraught (quẫn trí) and you are at the bottom of your well and you’re at your end of your rope, you don’t know where to turn or what to do, it is very difficult to come into a place and ask for help.

"The best of the lot" nghĩa là gì?

Nồi nào vung nấy. Photo by juan pablo rodriguez

"The best of the lot" -> Cái tốt đẹp nhất trong một lĩnh vực cụ thể nào đó như điều tốt nhất trong tất cả mọi thứ, người tốt/giỏi nhất trong tất cả mọi người.

Ví dụ
Check out all of the other Vote 4 the Best winners and finalists! Use the list as your Go-To Guide to the "BEST" of the lot around town.

Planning a post-Labor Day (ngày sau ngày kỷ niệm ngày lễ lao động) getaway (sự trốn thoát)? For many travelers, the back-to-school shoulder season offers the best of the lot, with still-glorious weather, thinner crowds (ít người hơn) and lower prices.

Nominations are now being taken and will be in all of our nearly 200 categories (phân loại) that seek to find the best of the lot Anchorage has to offer from restaurants to bars, cannabis (cây cần sa) shops, music, the arts, the medical field, the business and professional field, and all the favorite locations that connect them all.

"Be easy meat " nghĩa là gì?

Xin lỗi, tôi không phải đứa dễ dãi như mấy người nghĩ. Photo by  Ryan Moreno

"Be easy meat" = Miếng thịt dễ ăn -> Chỉ các những người/mục tiêu dễ ăn được, dễ thuyết phục và dễ lừa bịp.

Ví dụ
Ha, but seriously, he is a bit of a light weight and despite his furious running style, when caught near the sideline (đường biên) it seems that he is easy meat.

That performance last nite by Kenley was humiliating (lăng mạ), for Kenley………he needs a serious shot of self confidence now, he’s easy meat and in need of some serious repair. You cannot keep trotting him out there “Dave”, but I’ve been saying that for weeks now to no avail (không kết quả, không lợi ích).

Charlton [2.60] were smart operators on home soil during their promotion-winning campaign (chiến dịch thăng chức). Athletic bagged W16-D5-L2 last season as hosts, a run of results that included an eye-catching W4-D1-L0 return when welcoming top-six rivals (đối thủ), and the Addicks have already overcome highly-fancied Stoke here this season, suggesting they're no easy meat.

"Hold a candle to" nghĩa là gì?

Thổi đi rồi hẵng ăn -_- Photo by: Thanh Tran on Unsplash

"Hold a candle to" = giữ cây nến -> dùng để so sánh, có nghĩa là tốt hoặc đáng mong đợi so với người/vật khác.

Ví dụ
A lot of people don’t think that he or Andrew Garfield can still hold a candle to Tom Holland, but hey, we’ve all got our favorites. For my own opinion, Garfield was better than Maguire and Holland has them both beat in terms of youth (tuổi trẻ) and the overall Peter Parker persona (tính cách).

Johann Schmidt, the Red Skull, is easily one of the deadliest (chết chóc) villains (phản diện) that Marvel has to offer. Going beyond being Captain America’s oldest enemy, Red Skull has committed acts so atrocious (tởm lợm) that he is hard to hold a candle to.

"I was like, 'where? Where am I gonna be a leading man?'" Porter said. "There is not a bone in my body that is ever going to be able to hold a candle to the masculinity (nam tính), to the straightness, that the archetypes (hình mẫu) require.”

"Hold my beer" nghĩa là gì?

Rượu ngon phải có bạn hiền :) Photo by: Elevate on Unsplash

"Hold my beer" = cầm hộ (tao) chai bia -> câu này cho thấy người ta bắt đầu làm những trò ngu ngốc hoặc nguy hiểm, thường được dùng mang tính châm biếm để diễn tả việc/hành động xấu mà sau đó còn xảy ra điều tồi tệ hơn.

Ví dụ
If you thought the five changes from All Blacks coach Steve Hansen for Bledisloe II were extreme (cực độ), Scotland mentor (cố vấn) Gregor Townsend has had a "hold my beer" moment.

But I gotta tell you — and this is the voice of experience from a Texas native (người bản địa) — the most truthful (chân thực) song in his repertoire (tiếp tục) may be “Merry Christmas from the Family.” It’s got every cliché (rập khuôn) in it but “hold my beer and watch this,” and I suspect that’s pretty much implied anyway.

It might have felt like sport had hit peak stupidity (ngu ngốc) earlier this month when cricket decided the winner of its showpiece tournament based on the number of boundaries hit, but here comes Supercars with a "hold my beer" moment.

"Doesn't hold a candle" nghĩa là gì?

Nóng lắm, cầm sao được. Photo by: Jude Beck on Unsplash

"Doesn't hold a candle" (hoặc "Can't hold a candle") = không giữ được cây nến -> nghĩa là không tốt hoặc không được như mong muốn so với người/vật khác.

Ví dụ
This oil company is hot, hot, hot. Literally. As toasty as Texas can get in the summer, it doesn’t hold a candle to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital (thủ đô), where the average high in August is around 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet the world’s largest energy producer, Saudi Aramco, has picked next month to hold its inaugural (buổi khai mạc) investor relations call.

While it doesn’t hold a candle to the killer selection of free games Xbox One owners are getting in August, the lineup of PlayStation Plus free games for next month is nothing to sneeze at. If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you’ll get both the triplet of futuristic (tương lai) racing games in the WipEout Omega Collection (which has a VR mode too) and Sniper Elite 4, which got solid reviews when it launched back in 2017.

That turned out to be a bit of a scandalous affair (vụ bê bối), as some fans now believe Jinger plans to let her daughter play sports, which is strictly verboten in the Duggar's world. But it doesn't hold a candle to the Duggars' latest outing, in which they dined on ribs at a place with the awesome name of Ribs Against the Machine.

"Make it rain" nghĩa là gì?

vung... tiền đi em :) Photo courtesy Jake Guild.

'Make it rain' = tạo cơn mưa (tiền) -> nghĩa là ném tiền giấy lên không trung để chúng rơi xuống đầu ai, ví dụ ca sĩ nhạc rock, vũ nữ thoát y khi biểu diễn; nghĩa khác là tiêu tiền hoang phí.

Ví dụ
There’s way less romantic treachery (hành động phản bội/phụ bạc) on Jim Jones’s 2006 banger “We Fly High,” a master class in ballin’. The Dipset rapper hops G4 flights, makes it rain buckets at the strip club (câu lạc bộ múa thoát ý/khỏa thân), and rocks an Audemars Piguet watch with $100K worth of diamonds (kim cương).

While it was not made explicitly clear in her tweet, the folks over at Stereogum used their noggins to deduce that CupcakKe is probably not making it rain $10,000 each night; rather, the site said she'll probably give out that amount over the course of her 21-date run, which includes a stop in Detroit at the Shelter on Sept. 8.

There are plenty of reasons you might want to try out the new Edge. It's a very slick browser and it's built on the same base as Google Chrome, so there's a minimal learning curve when you switch. It may also wind up being the most secure browser around now that Microsoft is willing to make it rain, and that's a pretty good reason to switch browsers in 2019.

"In the melting pot" nghĩa là gì?

Có trúng hay không để tui còn đi về nào. Photo by: Court Prather on Unsplash

"In the melting pot" = trong cái nồi nóng chảy -> nghĩa là trong trạng thái thay đổi liên tục, có kết quả không ổn định. Thường dùng trong thể thao.

Ví dụ
For them it always has to be in the melting pot until the end and that's the way it was on an electric evening at Elverys MacHale Park as they squeezed (bóp) past a Donegal team to book their place in the All-Ireland semi-final (bán kết) next Saturday.

I just think his performance today - and I know we can be a bit blinded (mù) by today - every aspect (góc cạnh) of it, the intelligence, vision and wrist-work. I go back to the first half when the game was in the melting pot and so many balls... the snigging, knocking the ball away, he was the one that was able to control the ball when it was 15 on 15.

I’m expecting (mong đợi) a belter, two teams going hell for leather and by the time the game is in the melting pot I think we’ll have more pace. At least that’s what I hope.
