"Come down to us" = Đã tồn tại từ xa xưa/từ rất lâu và cho đến hiện tại.

Ví dụ
Some of our old garden favourites have interesting pasts that have come down to us through the ages and add a special charm to them. Many were used for their medicinal, culinary (nấu nướng) and perfumery properties (nguồn cung cấp nguyên liệu cho các xưởng chế nước hoa) while others held religious and superstitious (mê tín) significance.

Chief Seattle’s famous speech at an 1854 treaty conference (hội nghị về hiệp định) was translated, transcribed and probably later augmented by a white man for white audiences. As that speech has come down to us, it reminds us of the perpetual (mãi mãi, vĩnh viễn) presence of the past, and of the resilience (sự kiên cường, bền lâu) and importance of the Salish peoples who lived here first and helped create the city we live in.

According to a brief comment, Cicero predates the Goths. Why? Cicero lived in the first century BCE, while the Goths were noticed by Roman historians in the first century CE. Surely, unbeknownst to each other, the Goths as an identifiable tribe were at least as old as Cicero. We don’t know whether they spoke a language nearly identical to the one that has come down to us (Bishop Wulfila’s fourth-century Gothic), but this is beside the point.
