"Measure one's length" = đo chiều dài -> nghĩa là ngã sõng soài.

Ví dụ
Beside its course stand great tussocks of grass (bụi cỏ) over which you can trip and measure your length in the soaking peat (bãi than bùn), wet moss (rong rêu) and boulder-broken turf (mảng đất sỏi) strewn (rải) with lichened stones...

While a man walks on plain ground (đồng bằng), he falls not ; or, if he fall, he doth but measure his length on the ground, and rise again without harm: but he, that climbeth high (trèo cao), is in danger of falling; and, if he fall, of killing.

It goes for nothing, and considered no fall, should you be dislodged from your saddle (trật khỏi lưng ngựa), and measure your length in a ditch, however bruised (bầm tím), provided always that you keep fast hold of the bridle, and prevent your horse from getting away from you: thus you see how easy it is to escape the unpleasant dilemmas (tình huống khó xử) you may sometimes be thrown into.
