"Put (one's) back up" = Làm cho ai phát cáu, nổi giận.

YOU can see why Ed Balls has sidestepped and soft-shoe-shuffled out of politics. In divided times that demand picking teams — the bottom line being ‘if you’re not with us, you’re against us’ — the ex-Strictly contestant is a master at seeing both sides of the argument. You wonder what it would take to truly put his back up.

There was no question on either side as to whether David Kobak, 77, fatally shot Frederick Loftus, 59, on Aug. 25, 2017. However, the defense presented a picture of two drunken men whose sudden quarrel (cuộc cãi lộn) led to one of their deaths, while the prosecution painted a picture of an individual who calmly and collectedly chose to shoot his friend after the friend said something to put his back up.

You can control anger by changing how you handle angering situations and what you say to yourself under your breath when you feel you have been wronged. No one can put your back up (or make you feel any emotion) unless you let them. You get angry because you say angering things to yourself (“That S.O.B., I’ll show him he can’t talk to me that way!) So all anger is really self-anger, and therein lies the potential we have to control it. We may not be able to keep people from doing stupid or angering things, but we can control how we respond to them.
