We see an example of this in Esther 4:1-3: “When Mordecai learned all that had been done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and he cried out with a loud and bitter cry. He went up to the entrance of the king’s gate clothed in sackcloth. And in every province, wherever the king’s command and his decree (sắc lệnh) reached, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting and weeping and lamenting, and many of them lay in sackcloth and ashes.”

1 Kings 20:31-32 And his servants said to him, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful (nhân từ, khoan dung) kings; let us put sackcloth on our loins and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will spare your life.” [32] So they girded (quấn quanh mình) sackcloth on their loins (chỗ thắt lưng), and put ropes on their heads, and went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-ha’dad says, `Pray, let me live.'” And he said, “Does he still live? He is my brother.”

The Rabbi of Chelm, continued: “Do you know who story of the King of Nineveh? He was the king who, upon hearing the prophet (tiên tri) Jonah calling for the people of Nineveh to repent (ăn năn), rent his garments (áo quần) and put on sackcloth and ashes, and he declared that all his people should fast with him for three days. He was, according to Pirkei deRabbi Eliezer, none other than Pharaoh! After the Red Sea, he left Egypt, got a new job, and this time, did not harden his heart. We all have access to free will and repentance. Even Pharaoh.”
