"Put the frighteners on" = Đe dọa/dọa dẫm/làm ai sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
A former TV and radio presenter has been cleared by a jury after being accused of sending a man round to the home of her former partner to put the frighteners on him, after she was previously convicted of smashing a wine glass over his head.

I could go on but, as you can see, when you throw all these differences together, there is a pretty strong case for arguing, this time, that things are different. And given interest rates are so low and that it’s usually rising interest rates that kill stock market booms (with rates not likely to rise here in 2020 and only a smidge (một chút, một tí) in the US, at the best), given this is a US election year and Donald Trump has put the frighteners on the Federal Reserve boss, Jerome Powell, then the stock market is likely to have another good year.

The club have quite properly responded to the attempt to put the frighteners on United’s executive vice-chairman with a pledge to ban for life anyone found responsible. One would expect nothing less, yet it is entirely possible that those who turned up at Woodward’s home with flares (pháo sáng) and fireworks are not regular attendees at Old Trafford anyway. Far from being representative of the prawn sandwich brigade (đội, tổ) they are more likely to be people disenfranchised by either the price of season tickets or the difficulty of gaining admission to mainstream games nowadays.
