"Put the tin lid on" = Đậy nắp thiếc lên -> Chấm dứt/giải quyết chuyện rắc rối hoặc tình huống tồi tệ theo cách tiêu cực nên kéo thêm sự khó khăn (đổ thêm dầu vào lửa).

Ví dụ
May almost put the tin lid on affairs in the last minute with a remarkable 45 yarder which was parried by the back-pedalling Hearts keeper. There was still time for a final twist and Clare pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box and drilled home to rescue a precious point.

Then, two weeks ago, the astonishing proposals for the ‘divvy up’ of convergence (hội tụ) funding put the tin lid on it. To make matters worse, having caused the controversy (sự tranh luận, bàn cãi) with ill-thought out convergence spending proposals, their hapless attempts to defend themselves have pissed off everyone.

Crashing defeat for Corbyn was on the cards already, of course, but this level of ignorance put the tin lid on it, as we say in South Yorkshire. Even if ‘The Queen’, as my grandma used to call the annual televised address, isn’t on your own Christmas Day schedule, you’d expect the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition to know what time she spoke. This highlights the nature of modern British patriotism (chủ nghĩa yêu nước, lòng yêu nước). It’s there in the background, whirring away, influencing us far more than we might think.
