Many sharks (cá mập) are alpha predators (động vật ăn thịt, dã thú; người lợi dụng người khác (nhất là về (tài chính) và tình dục)), and their hunting plays an important role in many offshore reef ecosystems because through feeding they keep the local fish populations in check. Now it turns out their feeding may help coral reefs on the other end of the food chain (chuỗi thức ăn) as well.
Sharks, those swarming scoffers (người hay chế giễu, người hay nhạo báng; người hay phỉ báng) of ocean seafood, are prolific poopers as well. And shark manure (phân, cứt) may be... an important source of fertilizer (phân bón) for coral reef (rặng san hô).
Palmyra Atoll is a remote (xa xôi, hẻo lánh) wildlife refuge (nơi trốn tránh; nơi ẩn náu; nơi trú ẩn) about 1,000 miles south of Hawaii. The atoll is small, less than 3 square miles, and lined with sandy beaches and palm trees.
