"Thin on the ground" = thưa thớt trên mặt đất -> nghĩa là không nhiều, hiếm, ít có. Ngược lại là "thick on the ground".

Ví dụ
"Information had been really thin on the ground, so there had been a lot of confusion (nhầm lẫn) and it's actually created a lot of fear amongst early childhood providers and educators (nhà giáo dục)," Ms Vallence said.

In such a world, bold ideas (ý tưởng táo bạo) will be needed to rejuvenate (trẻ hóa) and renew. In the aftermath (hậu quả) of the greatest economic calamity (thảm họa kinh tế) since the 1930s, this will be no time for myopia (cận thị) and small thinking. It will be a time to start a fresh in a world where trust will be in short supply and friends thin on the ground.

It was a film of first crushes (cảm nắng) on stars David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly who matched wits (trí tuệ) with one another over possession (sở hữu) of the baby Toby. It also existed in a time when good fantasy films (phim viễn tưởng) were thin on the ground, long before franchises (thương hiệu) like 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Harry Potter' made elves (người lùn), goblins (yêu tinh) and magic cool again.
