"Jump the broom" = nhảy qua cây chổi -> nghĩa là cưới nhau. liên quan tới phong tục thế kỷ 18 với các "đám cưới giả", đám cưới có nghi ngờ về giá trị pháp lý. gần đây nổi lên trong cộng đồng người mỹ gốc phi từ những năm 1970 (do tiểu thuyết nổi tiếng Roots), phong tục từ giữa thế kỷ 19 nô lệ miền nam thời trước cách mạng mỹ.
