"Hell of a time" nghĩa là gì?

"Hell of a time" = cái thời gian quái quỷ gì đâu -> câu tiếng lóng này dùng để diễn tả công việc vô cùng khó khăn và không dễ chịu tí nào; hoặc điều rất thú vị và phấn khích.

Ví dụ
My old man was a ballplayer. Long before he met my mother, he bounced around several minor leagues as a good-hit-no-field second baseman, and he had a hell of a time that he believed would never end. That’s why he made absolutely no plans for life after second base, which is how he wound up in the dye house of A. Hollander & Son, a firm that dyed fur pelts.

I’ve spoken in generalizations here about major takeaways from the memoirs (ký sự, hồi ký) of a few dozen students. These points don’t all apply to any particular student, but they were collectively enlightening to me, and I share them to add to our profession’s record of this moment. The last line of Granny’s diary entry for July 27, 1990, the day the coup d'état attempt broke out, comes to mind: “It’s a hell of a time.”

These arguments are no substitute for a proper conversation, but I feel my talent for that is atrophying (teo, hao mòn). All I can lay claim to is a surprising degree of self-control: not to say “you stupid ****”, in capitals, shows I am maturing as a person. But I must say, to appropriate one of the gags from that amusing film Airplane!, I sure picked a hell of a time to cut my intake of drink by 50 per cent.
