While I spent my whole teenage years scared into submission by wearing a back brace, worried that if I failed to complete my treatment I would be cut open and put back together with a “nasty scar” to prove it, Eugenie went ahead and had the operation which she knew would mark her for life.

“You can do whatever you want later in your existence, but these things mark you for life,” she recounts. She started attending the Italian Communist Party’s (PCI) meetings alongside her father, and then joined local unions to fight against the illegal gangmaster (đội trưởng) system in agriculture, which at the time was particularly harsh against women.

Since I was a small boy during WWII, the war did mark me for life. Much of Hitler’s army had grown up under Hitler’s youth programs in which military training played a dominant role (vai trò ưu thế, nổi bật). I’m guessing that Hitler could not imagine what a tremendous (to lớn) fighting force a democracy like America — whose youth were exposed to playing baseball, football and basketball versus training for military combat (cuộc chiến quân đội) — would prove to be on the battlefield (chiến trường).
