"Strain at the leash" hoặc "be straining at the leash" = kéo căng dây xích -> nghĩa bóng là hành động, cố gắng thoát khỏi trở ngại để tiến lên phía trước. Cụm từ lấy hình ảnh con chó bị xích nhưng muốn chạy đi sẽ cố kéo căng dây xích đang buộc mình.

Ví dụ
The beast continued to strain at the leash despite Rashid's attempts to control him.

She strains at the leash, she stares at the field, she smells the ground, longing for the opportunity to do it all over again; to chase that rabbit she almost caught.

It's not both itself and also, so to speak, a fact between itself and something else—already on the way to something else. It's not always straining at the leash or indeed halfoff the leash, no doubt fortunately.

"Then why the hesitation? I would have thought you'd be straining at the leash to get bin Shafiq after what he did to the old man.”
“I want him more than anyone, Adrian, but I never strain at the leash. This is a dangerous operation—too dangerous for you even to attempt."
