'wipe the/one's slate clean' có 'slate' = bảng đen -> cụm từ này nghĩa là xóa bỏ, tha thứ, quên đi những việc làm sai trước đây (của ai); làm lại cuộc đời; loại bỏ hệ thống/cấu trúc... cũ và thay bằng cái mới.

Ví dụ
“I have been working in the media industry for close to 25 years so it required me to wipe my slate clean and embrace a whole new way of thinking.”

With her rocky past behind her, Lucy is happily settling into her new home when her artsy new mentors deliver a staggering bombshell: They, too, need to escape their own small-town troubles, and the only way to wipe the slate clean and start anew (lại một lần nữa) is if Lucy helps them fake John's death.

Chief Gray, meanwhile, sees an opportunity to wipe the slate clean of animosity (thù hận) or miscommunication that surrounded the house when it was still standing. He doesn’t specify what might replace the home, but says: “My son’s name is Phoenix for a reason. That’s the way we have to look at it, I think, at the silver lining. Yes, it was burned to the ground. But there’s a chance for something to come out of it.”
