"Be out to lunch" nghĩa đen là bỏ dở công việc đi ăn trưa, nghĩa bóng là bảo ai điên, kỳ lạ, hoặc hay quên việc này việc kia.

Yesterday when you were out to lunch the phone rang a couple times.
Here, for instance, is Roth's hero talking on the telephone to the wife of his old friend, who died suddenly at home while she was out to lunch: 'Was it a stroke or was it a heart attack?'
