I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you" = tôi có thể nói cho bạn biết (bí mật này) nhưng tôi phải giết người diệt khẩu -> nghĩa là từ chối không muốn trả lời (cách nói hài hước).

Ví dụ
"I been keeping 'em to myself so nobody'd get hurt, but it looks like I'm gonna have to let you in on it.” I stared numbly (điếng người). I was thinking of the saying I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. I glanced at my watch.

“Well, thank you. I do know the secret to closing all sales now.” He grinned (cười toe toét).
“Really, what is it?”
“I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.”
Ainsley laughed. “C'mon. Tell me!”

"Bullshit. You'd have just as many questions, if not more than I do,” replied Kampos. “What the hell is going on? And don't give me any I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you secret agent (mật vụ) crap (tào lao) either. "
“Ooh ... where'd you get it?”
“I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.”
