"Rooted to the spot" = bị cắm rễ tại chỗ -> nghĩa là đứng yên một chỗ/không nhúc nhích do quá bàng hoàng, xúc động hoặc sợ hãi/thất kinh/khiếp đảm; 'chôn chân tại chỗ', sững người, lặng người đó các bạn.

Napoli then seized control of proceedings, though, with a passage that began with Lorenzo Insigne flicking Piotr Zielinski's effort just wide with Samir Handanovic rooted to the spot.

Just after 11 p.m., he got his first taste. A chest-pounding boom echoed through the square as dozens retreated from the fence. Some people who had come prepared with gas masks and leaf blowers moved toward the front. Wheeler stood rooted to the spot in front of black-clad demonstrators carrying umbrellas and homemade shields.

We are vaguely (ngờ ngợ) terrified by a dystopian (lạc chỗ) future where freshwater is scarce and the earth is mostly arid. But it feels like the next generation’s problem. The long-looming, slow-approaching nature of the threat makes it feel impossible to do anything about it. It reminds me of a scene in Austin Powers where we see a hapless (rủi ro, không may) guard, rooted to the spot, screaming in horror at the approach of a large steamroller that will surely flatten him, only for the camera to pan back to reveal it is hundreds of feet away, moving at a snail’s pace (tốc độ con ốc sên). The steamroller will arrive. Will we be standing in the same spot?
