"The law is a ass" nghĩa là gì?

"The law is a ass" = luật lệ là cái đít -> dùng để nói về những luật vớ vẩn, nực cười, không cần thiết.

He may not have had authority, but he had his reasons. Dark as they are, the news accounts from Seattle could otherwise have been much worse this morning.
I had originally heard this phrase as “the law is a ass,” and most editions of Oliver Twist (including 1800s ones) use that phrase; but some — including some 1800s ones, such as the one I cited — use “the law is an ass,” and I thought this would be less distracting. But it looks like it’s distracting either way, since three readers e-mailed me to say it should have been “a ass.” So I thought I’d flag (đánh dấu) this, for the benefit of readers who are interested in such things.
“The law is a ass,” Charles Dickens wrote in the 19th century. Things in the legal sphere have not improved all that much since then, apparently.
