"What (in) the deuce" = chuyện gì vừa xảy ra, có vấn đề gì -> cụm từ cảm thán biểu thị sự ngạc nhiên, sốc, bối rối.

Ví dụ
What the deuce, she said; she might as well get pregnant by somebody she cared for, and live in some swamp hut (một dạng nhà cấp 4) with his infant (đứa con), because, what the deuce, what was living going to be like now?

“What in the deuce are you doing here?”
Mike, sitting behind the reception counter shuffling papers, raised his palm, ready to deflect any criticism (chỉ trích). "Hell's bells, Jake. You know what I'm doing here."

She smiled again, allowing her countenance (sắc mặt) to assume a particularly gentle expression, and pulled the door shut in my face. I went over and sank down on my bed and gave vent to a burst of profanity (nói tục). “What the deuce?” I asked myself.

"You do not eat, Mademoiselle Esmeralda?" She replied by a negative sign of the head, and her pensive glance (nhìn đăm chiêu) fixed itself upon the vault (khung vòm) of the ceiling. "What the deuce is she thinking of?" thought Gringoire, staring at what she was gazing at.
