"Judge (something) on its own merits" nghĩa là đánh giá dựa trên bản chất, giá trị của chính nó, đánh giá mặt tốt, mặt xấu và chỉ vậy.

He also refers to himself as an aon Wix (pitiful man) and implores (cầu khẩn) the reader to judge his commentary on its own merits, not on the basis of its “lowly” author.

That is why in such a case we usually prefer to judge the task on its own merits, with the help of its intrinsic (bản chất) qualities — to take stock of the result of the work rather than use as a basis the time necessary to carry out the task in question.

I want to judge everything on its own merits; I want to find out its merits and demerits (khuyết điểm), and I want to do this quite independently of any tradition. I want to judge it with my own brain, and not with the brains of other people who lived long ago.

But It’s a new story. Stories change as do the audiences. Culture is not sacred (thần thánh). It is shared, improved upon, degraded (suy thoái), and constantly changing. Can we just judge the film on its own merits and not the racial composition (thành phần) of its creators or divergence (sự khác biệt, đi trệch) from the past?
