"Stand at attention" nghĩa là đứng nghiêm.

Ví dụ
The 1917 compilation (tài liệu biên soạn) Our Flag and Our Songs venerated (tông trọng) the customs (phong tục) of standing at attention and saluting (chào) during flag raisings.

He was also the man who taught me to stand at attention. Remember learning that? It seems simple now. You stand with your body straight, your chest up, heels touching, hands at your sides, your gaze fixed forward.

If you got caught outside on foot, you were supposed to stop, stand at attention and salute the flag as the colors were lowered. Of course, if you were not in uniform, you stood at attention with your right hand over your heart.

It was just part of the daily process of being, as Kissinger described  it in a letter to his brother,  "pushed around (bắt nạt) and inoculated (tiêm chủng), counted, and stood at attention." For perhaps the last time in American history, the experience of military service (nghĩa vụ quân sự) was shared by an entire cross section of backgrounds and classes. As a result, World War II had the side effect of being a vast democratizing (dân chủ hóa) force,  one that transformed the  way Americans lived.
