"Pull the carpet (out) from under one's feet" = rút thảm dưới chân -> nghĩa là đột ngột ngưng hỗ trợ, giúp đỡ hoặc đẩy ai trong thế bế tắc.

Ví dụ
"What has been happening in the market recently may pull the carpet from under his feet during the critical year of the presidential election," Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank, said in a morning note.

Perhaps a new narrative is emerging. Bitcoin is volatile, yes, but so are a lot of other more mainstream investments that populate even conservative portfolios (danh mục đầu tư bảo tồn). And the volatility differential seems to be narrowing; this might continue. If so, bitcoin could become less a market hedge and more a volatility diversifier. As more investors embrace volatility, they will hopefully do so with a variety of tools. You’ll have heard the saying: “They can pull the carpet out from under your feet, or you can learn to dance on a moving carpet.”

It was particularly humiliating for Advani, who had built up Modi as his successor, not as the man who would pull the carpet from under his feet. The writing, however, had been on the wall for a long time. Except that Advani did not read it at all. Soon, the Loh Purush was to be reduced to a candle without a wick (bấc đèn), and Modi’s star burned bright. Back in 2006, there was a meeting with the RSS chief K.S. Sudarshan, which should have served as a sign of things to come. Advani had gone to meet Sudarshan in Nagpur, ostensibly (có vẻ là) to talk of another yatra, his pet subject whenever his career floundered. At the meeting, Sudarshan is said to have given the veteran leader a dressing down.
