"The customer is always right" nghĩa là khách hàng luôn đúng, khách hàng là thượng đế. Cụm từ xuất hiện những năm 1930 bởi H. Gordon Selfridge, doanh nhân người Mỹ thành lập nên Selfridges, trung tâm mua sắm lớn ở Anh.

Ví dụ
“The customer is always right,” is the saying every salesperson learns their first day on the job, and it’s especially annoying since like most cliches… it’s true. Of course, make no mistake, the customer is most often wrong, and yet, they’re still right.

They were rude, ignorant and inconsiderate (thiếu cân nhắc). It was an undignified spectacle (hình ảnh không đứng đắn) by senior citizens who are old enough to know better. They should have had greater self-control over their emotions. Yes, the customer is always right. But this does not mean a customer should be rude, heartless, or amoral (vô đạo đức).

That the customer is always right. Most customers may know what they want, but until they are fully informed, they really aren't sure. In my 30 years in business, I have always made sure that my customers know all they need to know about the products, the look of it and the surrounding environment so they can then make an informed decision of what they truly want. My customers are treated like I want to be treated, always in the know and always respected.

Working in the service industry, or any job that involves smiling for the public while a manager reminds you, "the customer is always right" can be incredibly difficult... Even when you absolutely know the customer isn't right and they never asked you for a side of ranch (một loại nước xốt) with their ice water and now they're yelling in your face about how you should just "know" that ranch dressing always goes with ice water, you have to smile and nod and try to fix the ridiculous problem despite their clearly misdirected (sai hướng) anger.
