"Throw him to the wolves" nghĩa là gì?

"Throw somebody to the wolves" = ném cho chó sói -> nghĩa là đặt một người vào tình huống mà họ bị khiển trách hoặc tấn công thậm tệ, và không đứng ra bảo vệ; nghĩa khác là hy sinh một người để cứu những người khác.

Ví dụ
After Mr. Agnew resigned in 1973 in the face of (mặc dù) extortion (tống tiền), tax fraud, bribery and conspiracy charges — he pleaded no contest to income tax evasion (trốn thuế) — and went into business, he and his wife dropped out of the public eye. The two emerged in 1994 to attend Nixon’s funeral, though Mr. Agnew believed that the president had thrown him to the wolves during Watergate to divert attention (hướng sự chú ý) from himself. Mr. Agnew died in 1996.

"People wondered if I'd really do [MMA], and I always said it had to be the right opportunity and the right conversation. The right conversation is giving me the chance to actually train, get ready and learn to [the point] where, when it's time for me to get into the ring with an elite MMA fighter, I'm ready. I don't think anybody could ever throw me to the wolves—I'm the wolf. We're just going to take my time and learn. I'm not going to go in there and give myself a disadvantage."

As NRA (Hiệp hội Súng trường Quốc gia) members and patriots who love our country and all the good it has done for Americans and for the rest of the world, we all know a fundamental decision will be made when we go to the polls in a few short days. However, as I have stated here in recent issues, and as you’ve read in Wayne LaPierre’s “Standing Guard” columns, the decision facing us in this election is of a different magnitude than ever before in our history. Voters will act to either save America, the America we love and cherish—or will vote to throw her to the wolves.
