"Free-range parenting" nghĩa là gì?

"Free-range parenting" -> nghĩa là cách giáo dục con cái bằng cách cho chúng độc lập để hình thành sự tự tin, tính sáng tạo, và kĩ năng xử lý tình huống.

Ví dụ
This is the form of ‘helicopter parenting’ most often counterpoised (bằng với) to so-called free-range parenting. It is also one that seems likely to lend itself to relatively straightforward solutions, such as debunking (vạch trần) fears about stranger danger or abduction (bắt cóc). This is the approach used by Lenore Skenazy in her book Free-Range Kids.

This “can do” family culture has taken them and their children some interesting places — running marathons and climbing mountains, for example — but Ben Crawford admits their radical (quyết liệt) free-range parenting today is partially the recoil (dội lại) from the authoritarian (độc đoán) parenting they adopted young in their marriage.

Free-range parenting aims to foster (thúc đẩy) independence (độc lập) in children by giving them greater autonomy (tự quản) and less adult supervision. It is not a total abdication (từ bỏ) of rules, the way permissive (tựu do) parenting is.

"Diseases of the soul are more dangerous than those of the body" nghĩa là gì?

Nỗi đau tinh thần thật khó để nói bằng lời. Photo by Daria Sannikova from Pexels

"Diseases of the soul are more dangerous than those of the body" nghĩa là nỗi đau tinh thần khó lành hơn nỗi đau thể chất. Câu nói này được cho là của Marcus Tullius Cicero, một chính khách và triết gia người La Mã.

Ví dụ
Moreover, he ascribed (quy cho) mental illness to emotional disturbances (rối loạn cảm xúc), to passions, and distinguished between delusions (hoang tưởng) and hallucinations (ảo tưởng)... However, diseases of the soul are both more dangerous and more numerous than those of the body.

He has to exhibit and prescribe a remedy (kê đơn) that will cure every disease and malady (bệnh tật) to which the souls of men are or can be subject. If this medicine be received and taken, life and health infallibly (luôn luôn) follow. It never fails of curing all the dire diseases of the soul, infinitely more dangerous and fatal than those of the body.

As Cicero observed long before the advent (xuất hiện) of modern lifestyles and contemporary neuroses (loạn thần kinh), 'Diseases of the soul are more dangerous and more numerous than those of the body.' It is fair to say that today many Westerners are suffering from what seems to be spiritual malaise (bất ổn tinh thần) with much accompanying mental dysfunction (rối loạn).

Pascal believed that there are diseases of the soul that are much worse than the diseases of the body. We sleepwalk (mộng du) through too much of life. Or we sleep run. We are automatons (người máy) in high gear. And we are out of touch (lỗi thời) with the deepest and most important issues we need to address. We cut ourselves off from the deepest sources of wisdom and guidance and then complain about how our lives are going.

"Take a hard right" nghĩa là gì?

Phải hết sức cẩn thận với cung đường này. Photo by Brad Prudhon

"Take a hard right" nghĩa là ngoặt, rẽ đột ngột và mạnh sang phải.

Ví dụ
At a T-junction, take a hard right turn on 304 and walk across a wash. The trail gently ascends southward toward a pass (đèo).

After that portion of the obstacle course I had to take another hard right to find the ten-foot-wide channel that paralleled the coastline through an area of sand flats.

Follow this road to the right to a hair-pin turn (chỗ quanh chữ chi), with a sign to Vicuña Reserve, and take a hard right fork (not shown on map) to get to the Ambato-Guaranda Road in 1.5 hours.

Take Blooming Rose Road for 1.2 miles and make a hard right to keep with Blooming Rose Road. In another 1.8 miles turn left onto White Rock Road. (If you miss this, you'll cross into West Virginia when the road becomes CR-11.)

"Somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan" nghĩa là gì?

Tượng đài Thành Cát Tư Hãn tại Mông Cổ. Photo by Brian Moore

"Somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan" = đâu đó bên cánh hữu Thành Cát Tư Hãn -> nghĩa là nói đến người cực kỳ bảo thủ hoặc cuồng tín (cánh hữu) trong chính trị hoặc tín ngưỡng. Cụm từ phê phán tư tưởng chính trị cực hữu (far-right) liên tưởng tới chế độ cai trị man rợ và chuyên chế của Thành Cát Tư Hãn.

Ví dụ
And they often put such things in ludicrous (lố bịch) extremes: “I could shoot them all,” “my politics are slightly to the right of Genghis Khan,” and so on. So one thing that warrants (đảm bảo) our analysis is that this is a rather colorful feature of these data.

In 1985, when Catholic bishops (giám mục) were no longer automatically treated with reverence (tôn kính), a Magill magazine profile called him the 'Mullah of Limerick' (a nickname first pinned on him by Conor Cruise O'Brien), perceived in liberal Dublin circles to be on the right of Genghis Khan.

Sam Williams, the titular head (lãnh đạo) of the group, was a retired academic urologist (nhà niệu học), best known for his innovative work in the field of impotency (liệt dương) and, in particular, his involvement in the development of the Mentor Inflatable penile prosthesis (thay ghép dương vật giả). Sam's political leanings were somewhere to the far right of Genghis Khan's.

Because of his patriotism (lòng ái quốc), many thought of Fred as an extreme conservative (bảo thủ cực đoan) (“somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan,” quipped (châm biếm) one colleague), but that was a glib (thoáng qua) analysis. Kerr's problem was that he was disgusted by the tyrannical (chuyên chế) extremes of either the left-wing bureaucrat (quan liêu) or the right-wing petty dictator (tiểu nhân), as he would call them.

"The customer is always right" nghĩa là gì?

Luôn phải mìm cưởi là đặc thù của ngành dịch vụ. Photo by Brett Sayles from Pexels

"The customer is always right" nghĩa là khách hàng luôn đúng, khách hàng là thượng đế. Cụm từ xuất hiện những năm 1930 bởi H. Gordon Selfridge, doanh nhân người Mỹ thành lập nên Selfridges, trung tâm mua sắm lớn ở Anh.

Ví dụ
“The customer is always right,” is the saying every salesperson learns their first day on the job, and it’s especially annoying since like most cliches… it’s true. Of course, make no mistake, the customer is most often wrong, and yet, they’re still right.

They were rude, ignorant and inconsiderate (thiếu cân nhắc). It was an undignified spectacle (hình ảnh không đứng đắn) by senior citizens who are old enough to know better. They should have had greater self-control over their emotions. Yes, the customer is always right. But this does not mean a customer should be rude, heartless, or amoral (vô đạo đức).

That the customer is always right. Most customers may know what they want, but until they are fully informed, they really aren't sure. In my 30 years in business, I have always made sure that my customers know all they need to know about the products, the look of it and the surrounding environment so they can then make an informed decision of what they truly want. My customers are treated like I want to be treated, always in the know and always respected.

Working in the service industry, or any job that involves smiling for the public while a manager reminds you, "the customer is always right" can be incredibly difficult... Even when you absolutely know the customer isn't right and they never asked you for a side of ranch (một loại nước xốt) with their ice water and now they're yelling in your face about how you should just "know" that ranch dressing always goes with ice water, you have to smile and nod and try to fix the ridiculous problem despite their clearly misdirected (sai hướng) anger.

"Send the right message" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy chỉ truyền đi những thông điệp có ý nghĩa. Photo by Sora Shimazaki from Pexels

"Send the right message" = truyền đạt đúng thông điệp -> nghĩa là truyền đạt, đưa ra tuyên bố chính xác.

Ví dụ
Morgan said: “I’ll come to where you are anytime next week if we can do this. Let’s do it together, live on air (phát trực tiếp). It would be powerful, it would send the right message.”

Golding further called for party members to display respect in how they address each other, noting that vitriolic (cay độc) remarks spattered (tràn lan) on social media do not send the right message.

Piers added: "I’m serious, I’ll come to where you are, any time next week, if we can do this and let’s do it together live on air. It would be powerful. It would send the right message, If you take it, I take it, Susanna takes it, Dr Hilary takes it. I think it will have an impact."

There is still so much more to do. There is still racism in rugby (bóng bầu dục), whether it be through ignorance (ngu dốt), a lack of education or just outright racist people. It’s a fact. In terms of outright racist incidents, you don’t hear of them too much. But when you do hear of them, are they getting dealt with properly. At the moment, I don’t think so. It doesn’t send the right message.

"Shoot her fox" = bắn con cáo -> nghĩa là ngăn chặn trước kế hoạch hoặc tham vọng của ai.

Ví dụ

"No one’s going to shoot your fox, boy".

2004 Scotland on Sunday The Democrats (Đảng dân chủ) had planned to make unemployment a key issue in their campaign: Dubya, with his tax cuts, has shot their fox.

Congress (Quốc hội) may have shot the president's fox, though, with a bill that he cannot politically afford (đủ khả năng chính trị) to veto (bác bỏ), but which leaves him with no opportunity (cơ hội) to pass his signature healthcare plan.

"Comes with the territory" nghĩa là gì?

"Comes with the territory" -> nghĩa là chấp nhận như là kết quả tự nhiên của hoàn cảnh.

Ví dụ
We’ve had significant outbreaks that have been more related to ... team bonding type activities than they are to the actual participation in the sports. I think it’s been more related to folks not following distance measures (đo lường),” Singer said, noting that he is concerned about the direct physical contact that comes with the territory in sports. “I can’t say there is no transmission (chuyển động) on the field. It’s hard for me to say.”

“We really try to hold it together (giữ bình tĩnh) and provide hope and compassion (cảm thông) when we’re meeting with people, and our staff does a great job of that. But when they walked out, it brought us all to tears,” said Major Jayne May, who serves as a corps (quân đoàn) officer in Kingsport. Sadly, heartbreak often comes with the territory.

Adjusting and adapting (thích nghi) to change during a fight within the squared circle comes with the territory in the sport of boxing.

Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph still remembers coming in from recess as a kid and being sent directly to the nurse’s office to get a new change of clothes. For a 10-year-old, it comes with the territory of being the star quarterback (hậu vệ) on the playground.

"The Bible Belt" nghĩa là gì?

"The Bible Belt" = vành đai kinh thánh -> nghĩa là khu vực ở Mỹ tôn sùng, tin tưởng tuyệt đối vào chủ nghĩa chính thống Cơ đốc giáo, điển hình là vùng Trung tây và Nam.

Ví dụ
“The repercussions (tiếng vọng) were big, especially in the Bible belt,” recalled George Harrison for the Anthology series. “In the south they were having a field day.” Several dozen radio-stations stretching from Ogdensburg, New York, to Salt Lake City, Utah – instantly followed WAQY’s lead and banned the Beatles’ music.

There is something very South Carolinian about barbecue (đồ nướng). It might be due to Carolina barbecue sauces, or the legends that the dish actually began on the state’s coast. But if the South is deemed the Bible Belt, then South Carolina can be called the barbecue restaurant buckle, thanks to the many restaurants around that specialize in these smoked and saucy meats.

Daddy had been transferred (di chuyển) from New Orleans, where my mother’s family had resided since 1860, to Texarkana, buckle of the Bible Belt. Mama’s transition from First Baptist Church, New Orleans, home church of most of the administration and faculty of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, to the smaller, more conservative and less-educated churches of our town was not easy.

“Here in the heart of the Bible Belt, LGBTQ people have really flourished (thịnh vượng) and have ensured that our culture has been maintained and that we’ve created safe spaces for ourselves, and one of those safe spaces is right here in Norman, Oklahoma,” Shinn said in the press conference.

"Be all fingers and thumbs" nghĩa là gì?

Lý do mẹ không dám nhờ mình làm gì :((((. Photo courtesy : Helen Shine

"Be all fingers and thumbs" or "Be all thumbs" = chỉ toàn ngón cái -> nghĩa là vụng về.

Ví dụ
Tom could never be a surgeon (bác sĩ phẫu thuật) —he's all fingers and thumbs.

Can you sew this button on for me? I'm all fingers and thumbs.

I'm all fingers and thumbs when it comes to wrapping packages.

We've didn't want another flip phone (điện thoại bật nắp) because when it rings we're all fingers and thumbs and can't get it open quick enough after spending ages trying to get it out of the handbag.

"The grapes are sour" nghĩa là gì?

"The grapes are sour" = nho còn xanh lắm -> câu chê bai điều họ không thể có; nho xanh chẳng đáng miệng người phong lưu.

Ví dụ
It does appear that the grapes are sour for the opposition (bên đối lập) now that we are running the government. They are being troubled by all the good work that is being done in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and therefore, they are making false allegations.

I’d be surprised if they actually involved themselves in skulduggery where there was actually a blatant  (la om sòm) cheat or breaking the rules. I just don’t see that, it’s not something in their make-up as far as I’m concerned, and this could be a little bit of sour grapes on behalf of some of the teams.

Most traders end up losing, just like a fox thinking the grapes are sour, economically speaking. When you exclude (loại trừ) variables that really aren’t fair, like being born in an economically depressed part of the world or being born with a severe physical or mental handicap, the primary reasons why 95% of people fail at things like trading and business and wealth-creation, are pretty much the same across the board.

The only way to damp (giảm thiểu) their anger and disappointment, is by personal attacks and intimidation (hăm dọa) on responsible APC supporters. Ridiculous and sad. It’s better for them to cross the carpet before it’s too late. No need to pretend or say, the grapes are sour because, you can’t reach them.

"Speed trap" nghĩa là gì?

"Speed trap" = bẫy tốc độ -> nghĩa là nơi cảnh sát nấp và chờ để bắt những người lái xe chạy quá tốc độ.

Ví dụ:

BMW’s speed-trap alert will certainly be one of them. As for this specific speed-trap alert, it seems like a good deal.

He is charged with perverting the course of justice for allegedly(bị cáo buộc) using false registration plates(biển đăng ký), displaying false number plates to avoid speed traps, and kitting out the vehicle with speed-trap detectors(máy dò).

We have been told previously that this stretch of 8 Avenue doesn’t qualify for speed-control bumps because it’s classified as an arterial(huyết mạch) through-way. Well, if that’s the case, why can’t we have the RCMP increase their speed-trap surveillance in this area?

"Make a hit with" nghĩa là gì?

"Make a hit with someone" -> nghĩa là có ấn tượng ban đầu tốt đẹp với ai đó.

Ví dụ
The revival (hồi sinh) of small and medium enterprises is expected to make a hit with labourers (người lao động) and wage earners who have been rendered unemployed due to the outbreak of the pandemic.

Makhadzi made contact early last year, determined to make a hit with the man who had inspired her into a career in music and dance. She knew DJ Call Me was looking for a comeback. “I said to my team that I want to try something,” says Makhadzi. “I told them that they will see, it will work, because I am doing it with my heart. I knew that if we collaborate (hợp tác), we will make things happen.”

A gift card is a practical (thiết thực) solution but doesn't show off well. Here are suggestions on how to make a hit with that special Mr. or Ms. Fix-it-Myself person in your life.

Yes, if I get a hit or hits one game, I try to repeat what I did the next day. If I don’t get a hit, I don’t repeat it. If I don’t make a hit with a bat, I will switch it.
