As our family boiled in a beach car park waiting for a spot to be vacated (chỗ trống), I was surprised to learn that the places was not full, but chockers. Dressing for my first day of school, my sisters kindly informed me that being as flash as a rat with a gold tooth did not, in fact, mean that I resembled a rodent.

We cruise regularly and often. We love to mix with cruisers from other overseas (nước ngoài) countries and spruick this lucky country. It is a delight to see their facial expressions when I tell a well-dressed lady that she “looks as flash as a rat with a gold tooth”. Invariably (luôn luôn) they will ask me to repeat it, then they repeat it as they wish to recall it when they get home. Dare to be different.

There are some delightful comic scenes, not least as Harpagon transforms to impress Mariane. He is as flash as a rat with a gold tooth (or a gold lame jacket). Much of the strength of the production lies in Justin Fleming's witty new translation. He has taken a 17th-century French script and translated it into a contemporary Australian vernacular (thổ ngữ).

Looking at a photo of one Adolf Gustave Beutler, whose picture is inscribed with the words ‘wilful and obscene (khiêu dâm) exposure’, I can’t help but think of my grandmother’s beloved idiom for a well-dressed man with a sinister (đọc ác) streak: Beutler is, as many of the fellows are, as flash as a rat with a gold tooth.
