"Doctor Livingstone, I presume?" nghĩa là gì?

"Doctor Livingstone, I presume?" = anh là bác sĩ Livingstone đúng không? -> nghĩa là câu chào hài hước. Câu này bắt nguồn từ nhà thám hiểm người Scotland David Livingstone, người được cho là mất tích vào giữa thế kỉ 19, mãi cho đến khi phóng viên H. M. Stanley tìm thấy ông, anh đã chào ông bằng câu nói nổi tiếng này.
Ví dụ
Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh journalist (nhà báo) and explorer, best known for exploring the Congo Basin , went in search of Livingstone and eventually found him in 1871. When he first saw the Scottish missionary/explorer he is purported (có ý định) to have uttered (thốt ra) the memorable phrase, ‘Doctor Livingstone, I presume?’ However, it is highly unlikely that Stanley ever spoke these words .
The Queen arrived at your correspondent (người viết thuê), gave him a puzzled look, whereupon (và thế là) he humbly explained “I’m from The Times, Your Majesty”. The Queen, rather charmingly, gave him a winning smile and said something like: “Oh, well I don’t need to talk to you then.” Upon which Prince Philip arrived, gave a similar puzzled look to your correspondent, and then said “Doctor Livingstone I presume?”
In came this topper from Leonard Malkin of Troy, Mich., quoting William F. Buckley Jr. in one of his books on sailing: “What is the question to which ‘Doctor Livingstone I presume’ is the answer?” The question: “What is your full name, Dr. Presume?”
