We’re bringing in the new year with a series of virtual events to lift the spirits, induce gales of laughter and make us see the world anew. Featuring some of the brightest and funniest literary talents around, beloved personalities and bold artists with extraordinary (phi thường) stories to tell, this is a programme that promises to replenish (bổ sung) our sense of wonder. Opening and closing with poetry—from the exceptional T S Eliot Prize shortlist to a stellar digital edition Out-Spoken respectively—we’re bookending (liên kết) the series with electrifying performances to get the year off to a scintillating (sắc sảo) start.

But this was material conceived (quan niệm) in dialogue with an audience. There are no punchlines or conventional joke structures (cấu trúc), just an accumulation (tổng hợp) of airless nonsense that needs gales of laughter to keep it afloat.

It started last week, amid gales of laughter. ‘Sheemiss!’ my son cried from the stairs. I drew nearer to find my son pointing at me as he said one more time; ‘Sheeeeeemisssss’. He was calling me by my first name, in an adorably (dễ thương) sincere little act of rebellion (nổi loạn) that reduced him to dribbling, full-bellied hysterics (kích động).

In a Congressional hearing, Jim described an out-of-state academic hired by lobbyists (người vận động ở hành lang) to falsely dispute (lý sự) job-loss data as “an economic imbecile (khờ dại).” Afterward, facing Republicans who angrily demanded an apology, Jim was humble, stating, “You’re correct. I was wrong. He’s not an economic imbecile. He’s simply an imbecile.” We escaped amid gales of laughter.
