"Live in genteel poverty" có genteel là quý phái, thượng lưu, trưởng giả -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nghèo mà vẫn phong lưu (cố duy trì lối sống của giới thượng lưu, dù không đủ điều kiện để làm (như) vậy).

Ví dụ
A lively, well-travelled niece texted me last week that she and her mother were out walking round Hindustan Park—a stone’s throw from our house (cách nhà vài bước chân) — taking in all the trendy boutiques and bijou cafes and eateries that have sprung up in that once-somnolent (ngủ gà ngủ gật; ngủ lơ mơ), bhadralok residential area. It has clearly become Calcutta’s Camden Town or Greenwich Village. It seems commerce is no longer vulgar (khiếm nhã hoặc tục tĩu; thô tục; thô bỉ), and genteel poverty is no longer the acceptable ideal.

The first I knew of my new genteel state was the change in grocery shopping. Not only was the weekly filled-to-the-brim basket a distant memory, my choice of shops and what I bought also altered fundamentally. Once, at the start of my slide into genteel poverty, I arrived at a till (quầy tính tiền) with insufficient cash (không đủ tiền) to pay for my food. I had to leave the trolley, grunting 'I'll be back' in a poor Arnie imitation. I was, once I recovered my rainy-day notes hidden down the back of the sofa, but not without embarrassing my teenage daughter to the point of mortification.

The movie sort-of creates an alternative-reality “origin myth” for Peter Pan and Alice Liddell, imagining them as siblings, stricken with grief when a third sibling dies. And yet, bafflingly, the plot as it pans out doesn’t mesh with the well-established fictional stories of Peter and Alice, and neither with the real-world situations of how the authors came to create their legendary characters. David Oyelowo and Angelina Jolie play Jack and Rose, a Victorian married couple with three children who are supposed to live in shabby genteel poverty in the countryside, subsisting on Jack’s quaint woodworking skills (they have what appears to be a spectacular Elizabethan manor house). Mean Aunt Eleanor (Anna Chancellor) is always telling the little girl to be a lady.
