"Worm in the apple" = con sâu trong quả táo -> nghĩa là điều tưởng như tốt đẹp thực ra lại tồi tệ, xấu xa.

In an opinion piece that appeared in the local newspapers on Wednesday 10 and Friday 12 March 2021, Unam Emeritus Professor André du Pisani asked in a thought-provoking way if the country’s project of nation-building is dead.  For this, he referred to patriotic (yêu nước) history as the very worm in the apple of nation-building and reminded us of the ‘morally dangerous’ patriotic pride.  

The worm in the apple is critical race theory. This has been defined (định nghĩa) by Professor Derrick Bell as “a body of legal scholarship . . . ideologically committed to the struggle against racism, particularly as institutionalized in and by law.

At the same time, efforts need to be redoubled (gấp đôi) to excoriate (phê bình) the 'worm in the apple' – inflation – before it hurts the impulses of growth that are taking root.

The worm in the apple is that the Europeans can act independently, whether as individual nations or in concert (phối hợp) through the EU. The more independent they are, the less they want advice from Americans.
