“Not a living soul in sight” nghĩa là gì?

“Not a living soul in sight” = không có linh hồn sống trong tầm nhìn -> nghĩa là không có ai ở gần đây; ‘chẳng có ma nào cả’.

It seems strange to go to a 150-acre dog lover’s attraction without a dog. Even stranger, I think as I stroll around Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, Vt., is the fact that there’s not a living soul in sight. Granted, it’s a weekday in March — not exactly high tourist season in this part of the country — but I thought that I’d at least be greeted by a tongue-wagging Lab or a sniffing terrier (chó sục, quân địa phương) or two.

While returning from with a recent voyage (du hành) to Atlanta to bathe in the current mutation (sự biến đổi) of the Grateful Dead organism, your crosseyed correspondent (and his band of intrepid pilgrims (người du hành/hành hương dũng cảm)) visited Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon and spent some time near the resting places of Duane and Gregg Allman and Berry Oakley. Rose Hill was more like a magic garden then a cemetery (nghĩa trang), and we were surrounded by singing birds and yellow coins of light that the noon sun flung down, through the bobbling leaves, but there was not a living soul in sight, not as far as the eye could see, even way down among the long lines of plain stones marking the remains of unnamed Confederate soldiers. This visit to Rose Hill rolled over Hambone like a two-ton peach, so, upon his return home, he did some thinking, and some reading, and some listening.

Cresting a sandy hill somewhere on the outskirts of the Gorafe Desert, Andalucia, I stopped for a short break to snap some photos. A soft breeze rustled sparse, dry grasses on the slopes of the rolling hills; not a living soul in sight for miles, no traffic noise, and no traces of human activity as far as the eye could see – it felt like for one blissful moment, the world stood still, the sun beating down on the cracked earth, the air almost electric with silence and scorching heat. My only company was a lone, bone-dry bush resembling a phantasmagorical (thuộc ảo ảnh) Joshua tree, and instead of taking the camera out, I simply sat on the bike, engine off, taking it all in, in no particular rush to get anywhere at all.
