Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) announced the halt of a new electronic ID (eID) plan until various technical issues (vấn đề kỹ thuật) have been resolved so as to clear up any doubts (hồ nghi) about potential data breaches (vi phạm bảo mật dữ liệu).

The country began research projects exploring digital identification (ID) in 2017. Three years later, the authorities revealed a new digital ID plan originally slated for issuance in October 2020; however, it was delayed amid pandemic-induced card chip shortages as well as growing information security concerns.

The new digital ID card was said to incorporate (tích hợp) both National Insurance Card (chứng minh nhân dân) and driver’s license (bằng lái xe) details and be fitted with the highest-standard identification technologies to deter digital theft. Nevertheless, aspects of the card's design, manufacture, and oversight sparked a backlash after being made public.

Some voiced concerns related to inadequate constitutional legitimacy to ensure the confidentiality of digital footprints. Others warned of potential security breaches arising from foreign equipment makers' business partnerships with Chinese state-backed software service providers.
