THE 80th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz marks a moment that is still within living memory. In a bid to provide an enduring memorial to the people who lost their lives, the Northern Ireland War Memorial (NIWM) has been expanding its collection of material.

“I think they’re going to love all of it, but more so they’re going to love the opportunity to talk with the groups that they come in with, because some of it goes back to the early 1900s, but the rest of it is within living memory,” Day said. “So if we have a multi-generational group come in, the grandma can say ‘Oh my gosh, I had a pair just like this,’ and the grandkid can go, ‘Well I don’t even know what that is.’”

British writer and presenter Shon Faye hosts this new podcast that seeks to memorialise queer history, much of which is too easily forgotten by mainstream accounts of history, and does so with the aim of informing young queer people about their queer elders who came before and the struggles and liberations they lived through. It’s an interview podcast that features a new guest each week talking about their life, and one of the most immediately noticeable things about the show is how much queer history has occurred within living memory, and yet has not been deemed worthy of remembrance. Faye is a smart and thoughtful interviewer, and the show encourages an open dialogue between queer generations, acknowledging how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.
