"Esprit de l'escalier" nghĩa là gì?

"Esprit de l'escalier" = sự hóm hỉnh leo cầu thang (đi bộ) -> nghĩa là nghĩ ra câu hay để nói ở bữa tiệc, trò chuyện, tán tỉnh, tranh luận... thì việc đã qua mất rồi.

My former writing teacher, the essayist (nhà văn) and cartoonist Timothy Kreider, explained revision to me: “One of my favorite phrases is l’esprit d’escalier, ‘the spirit of the staircase’ — meaning that experience of realizing, too late, what the perfect thing to have said at the party, in a conversation or argument or flirtation would have been.

Have you ever thought of the perfect quip or comeback after it didn’t matter—a minute, hour, or day after your conversation has ended? Well, there’s a name for that phenomenon (hiện tượng). It’s called l’esprit de l’escalier, or the spirit of the staircase, and refers to the perfect retort (trả miếng) that arises at the wrong time.

I’ve balanced a week’s shopping on handlebars, and kneed myself in the bump when pregnant. And many journeys have been spent furiously pondering (suy nghĩ về) esprit de l’escalier retorts following altercations with taxi drivers.

The French have a phrase for things such as this. L’esprit de l’escalier describes that moment on the stairs when you think of exactly the right witty riposte (lời đáp lại), just 10 minutes too late.
