The average amount of time Britons use household appliances before giving them a clean has been revealed.

The study was conducted by the interior experts at www.Thomas-Sanderson.co.uk, in which 2,200 people over the age of 18 were polled.

Respondents were given a list of appliances and asked to estimate how long they leave between cleans for each, with the following emerging as the average time left between cleans for each appliance.

Oven – One and half years (average time between cleans)
Washing machine – One year
Dishwasher – One year
Microwave – Eight months
Toaster – Eight months
Toilet – Six months
Sink – Three months
Shower/bath – Two months
Hoover – Two months
Hob – One month

Next, respondents were asked to state how often they used each of these appliances, on average, to better understand how many uses each will get between cleans. For the top five appliances, this equated to:

Oven – 547 uses (between cleans)
Washing machine – 104 uses
Dishwasher – 182 uses
Microwave – 260 uses
Toaster – 243 uses

What’s more, from this it was found that the average Briton uses the toilet 546 times before they clean it.

Nearly three fifths (58%) admitted they usually wait until an appliance looks visibly dirty before cleaning them. It was also found 28% of respondents will get others to clean their home appliances, with 63% of these respondents often turning to their parents to aid them.
