"Laid him out in lavender" nghĩa là gì?

"Laid out in lavender" = rải hoa oải hương -> nghĩa là chuẩn bị chôn cất; nghĩa khác là giết hoặc mắng nhiếc thậm tệ.

Ví dụ
This was Friday. I was ready to” lay him out in lavender” when he spoke of my failing the test, But since he decided to let Rosser decide I decided it best to let it go and not risk (đánh liều) a confrontation.

On another occasion I had much less luck in impressing (ấn tượng) a student by intensive (mạnh mẽ) bawling out (lớn tiếng kiển trách). He was a frightful underachiever and I called him in "to lay him out in lavender," as the saying goes. Midway through my exhortation he looked at me with an impish grin and said, "Dean, you shouldn't get after me like this, you ought to be pleased (hài lòng) with me." "Why in the world should I be pleased with you?" "Dean, look, I am the kind of student who makes the upper half of the class possible, and you really need and upper half of the class."

The epistles (thư từ) of Paul are not like that. They always begin with a proclamation of grace and love. Even if he’s about to lay them out in lavender, he speaks first of grace.
